A lot of Irish people have a frustrated relationship with our own native language, mainly because of the way it was taught in schools.
Learning through immersion is different. That’s when you’re surrounded by it, using it daily, in real-time, with others.
I did all my schooling through Irish and so my experience was immersive, but only during school hours - we didn’t speak Irish at home. So it was less a way of life and more a skill I could use if I ever had need, opportunity or desire.
The thing about language though, is that without anyone to actually speak it with, you’re essentially just memorising words.
This week’s journaling session showed me: I’ve been trying to learn relationship skills like school Irish when what I actually need is immersion.
Theory is one thing. Reading about healthy communication, adopting the language, understanding its concepts intellectually - that’s the ‘evening classes’ version.
But being in relationship where each party is committed to growth beyond wounding? Where feedback isn’t a spider to crush or run from? Where conflict is the immersion pool you’re learning to float in [and not panic, therefore drowning each other in the process] together?
That’s terrifying. And apparently exactly what I asked the universe for.
